For our Andalucia trip we've teamed up with David from Biking Andalucia to gain some local knowledge. And quite considerable local knowledge it is too: David has been running mountain bike holidays out of Orgiva, a village at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, for over nine years. You can be sure he knows where he's taking us - and that he'll be taking us on some fantastic terrain.
The trip is a layed back farewell to Summer - plenty of good food, fine weather and fantastic riding.
Here are the juicy details:
Saturday
Arrival day - you'll arrive at Grenada airport and be taken to Orgiva, the main base for the week. If you arrive early enough there'll be time to unpack the bikes and head out for a quick blast on the local trails.
Sunday
The first proper day of the trip will see us riding more of David's backyard trails - a 600m climb followed by 14k of flowing singletrack before dropping those 600m back to base via Carataunas.
Monday
Today we head into the Sierra Nevada - we'll use the van for the first 1100m of climbing before setting off over Lomo de Matanza, crossing the Poquiera Barranco and finishing off in Capileira at 1450m. With over 70% singletrack, this route should set us up very well for the days to follow.
Tuesday
We're climbing for much of the day today - all the way up to 2,700m infact and the Poquiera Refugio - where we'll spend the night and a well earned rest.
Wednesday
After our high altitude night in the Refugio we'll descend down to 1650m and to Trevelez, Spain's highest village - a scenic route comprising 80% singletrack. Awesome stuff - we'll finish up at lunchtime today to let the legs have a rest!
Thursday
We're heading back to Capileira today - another awesome day with 70% singletrack, and more descending than climbing!
Friday
We head from Capileira to Pitres in the Trevelez Barranco; then on to Ferreirola, crossing the Trevelez barranco to Hoya de Magalite. Then a classic descent down Sierra de Mecina to Tijolas and back to our starting point. 80% of today's route is beautiful technical singletrack.
Saturday
For the last day riding we have a very scenic route on the Sierra Lugar to the south of Orgiva. We'll leave Orgiva at 400 metres; head down to the Rio Gualdalfeo at 200 metres; then climb to 850 metres on the Sierra Lugar for some fantastic views looking back to the Sierra Nevada and the trails we'll have ridden in the week. Then a final classic descent on singletrack, with switchbacks to Los Tablones, across the Rio Guadalfeo, and back up to Orgiva.
We'll be back in time to pack your bikes and say your farewells. Perhaps a Sangria in the sunset as well.
Sunday
We'll get you back to the airport for your flight back home. A sad day for sure :( But you should be going home with plenty of happy memories and a November suntan to make them jealous at work!
